Tiber eases Top Dogz’ financial blues

Alexandra's Top Dogz chairperson Thulani Ndlovu describes the acquisition of the Tiber sponsorship as a huge financial relief.

Tiber Construction has lightened the financial burden that has been weighing heavily on the shoulders of Alexandra’s cash-strapped Gomtown Boyz FC.

This is as the club moves into uncharted waters of the Safa Johannesburg Men’s Regional League in the 2023/24 season.

The club has signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the club. CEO Fernando Cardoso said, “We agreed with the club management on this three-year deal, hoping to establish a long-term relationship, depending on how it finally turns out. We are delighted to have struck the deal as we have been yearning to give back to Alex, which is just a stone-throw from our Sandton offices.

“We were previously involved with Nokuthula School and we view this Gomtown Boys sponsorship as a way to rekindle our relationship with the township.”

Cardoso said the company’s wish was to see boys taken off the streets, away from mischief and playing football while the club’s management facilitated that without the burden of having to scrounge around for resources.

“When Top Dogz came knocking on our door, I was touched as a soccer fan and we decided as a company it was about time to give back in a way that brings enjoyment to everybody, especially the young boys that can easily fall prey to unsavoury past times in the streets.”

Top Dogz chairperson Thulani Ndlovu confirmed that Tiber had provided 70% of the sponsorship for three years and described it as a huge financial relief as the club had to resort to selling T-shirts and other items to survive.

“We are over the moon to have secured this sponsorship but we are still appealing to other corporates to come on board and take the remaining 30%, and then we will know that we are home and dry and can concentrate on ensuring delivery from the technical staff and the boys on the field,” Ndlovu said.

After losing some players who requested to be released, Ndlovu said the club was busy in the market to acquire six or so new players to bolster the squad in time for the season.

Tiber Construction has been around since 1951 and has built the new offices of Discovery, Alexandra Forbes, the Alice Lane Precinct in Sandton, the Teraco Data Centre on R21 and the Airports Company South Africa head offices at OR Tambo International Airport.
