Speaking at the workshop recently held in Alexandra to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day, Ndlela said his party strongly believes that farming has the power to liberate the poor from the scourge of hunger and poverty.

“The purpose of today’s programme was to educate kids and teenagers about agriculture and the importance of having a garden at home. The IFP’s agricultural policy says one home or house, one garden. This programme was inspired by the health and welfare summit recently held in Montecasino, Fourways, during which the IFP engaged on various health and welfare topics including agriculture and its role in eradicating hunger and poverty,” Ndlela said.

“This programme also aims to help show community members that the IFP, as an organisation, cares about their wellbeing. It is also important for society to play a role in a healthy lifestyle by starting vegetable gardens in their homes. This will enable teenagers to consider careers in the agricultural sector as it contributes to economic growth,” Ndlela said.

A 14-year-old Nonhlelo Hadebe, one of the participants of the workshop said the workshop helped her understand a number of things about farming.

“The workshop has triggered in me an interest to learn more about farming. I’ve also taken a decision to that to come here every week to take part in the practical planting of vegetables. I am also considering studying agriculture post-matric,” Nonhlelo said.
