Nominations are now open for the Gauteng Sports Awards

Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Morakane Mosupyoe said the glittering gala dinner will be held in October in a township in the West Rand on a date and venue still to be confirmed.

Gauteng’s sportsmen and women who have excelled in their craft in the past year will be rewarded at the 2023 Gauteng Sports Awards whose nominations opened on July 6 and will close on August 4.

The date and venue for the awards of the glittering gala dinner are still to be announced. The Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Morakane Mosupyoe confirmed during a media launch at the Ellis Park Stadium that the 12th annual awards would be held in a township in the West Rand in October.

She told the audience the awards would be held under the theme ‘Enabling excellence, inspiring the youth’, in which ‘we shall be recognising, honouring, and rewarding Gauteng’s sporting excellence and at the same time paying tribute to individuals and teams who have excelled on and off the field’.

Calling on grassroots federations and sporting bodies to nominate their outstanding athletes in various sporting codes, Mosupyoe said the period to be considered during the nomination process would be from August 1 last year to July 31 this year.

Mosupyoe said sports achievers could also be nominated by sports stakeholders such as federations and sports councils, roleplayers and the public after which the adjudication panel would select three finalists in each category and decide on the winners.

For the Sports Personality of the Year category, she said the panel would select three to four finalists and the public would then be asked to vote for the winner, while for the Lifetime Achievement Award/s, the winner/s will be chosen by herself.

The awards will feature 20 categories, including Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Disabled Sportsman of the Year, Disabled Sportswoman of the Year, Most Promising Athlete of the Year, Amayanga-Yanga Player of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year and Fan of the Year. A new category included this year is the Sports Photographer of the Year.
