Alex youth urged to participate in Digify Africa’s ‘Transitioning from Learning to Earning’

Digify Africa will be hosting a virtual programme to help the youth to transition from learning to earning which will also be live-streamed on its Facebook page on June 1.

Youth in Alexandra and are urged to take advantage of a virtual information session on June 1 themed ‘Transitioning from Learning to Earning’.

The session will be hosted by Digify Africa in partnership with Credipple. The purpose of this session, which begins virtually from 10am to 12 noon, is intended to expose youth to employment platforms, opportunities, and programmes offered by Digify Africa’s network of partners.

This comes after the recent quarterly Labour Force Survey released by Statistics South Africa on May 17 this year indicated that the youth unemployment rate had increased by 1.1%, making the official national unemployment rate 32.9%.

According to the report, young people are the most impacted by unemployment, with 15 to 34-year-olds accounting for a large portion of the total unemployed population.

The report said slow economic growth, job scarcity and massive job losses experienced in the first quarter of this year, were some of the main contributors to the rising rate and cites a lack of skills and access to information as some of the challenges faced by young people when trying to access employment.

The Digify session will explore three economic pathways – employment, freelancing and entrepreneurship – and some of the participating speakers will include members of Credipple, Harambee, SA Youth, Mobi, Jobox, and Zadna, who will be sharing more about platforms and services available.

“Many young people struggle to transition from learning to earning due to a lack of information, support, and guidance. This session seeks to bridge these information gaps by exposing young people to different support networks they can leverage for assistance,” Digify Africa’s chief operating officer Qhakaza Mohare told Alex News.

Digify Africa has been tackling youth unemployment since 2011 through its youth upskilling initiative Digify Pro Online which offers in-demand digital marketing skills.

Their approach includes post-programme support to help young people transition into economic pathways as professionals, freelancers, or entrepreneurs in the digital industries.

Mohare said the organisation believed that an integrated intervention was needed to address the current unemployment crisis. Through this initiative, Digify Africa aimed to inspire collaborations that empowered young people with tools and resources to improve their job-seeking efforts and connect them to earning opportunities.

The information session will be live-streamed on Digify Africa’s Facebook page on June 1.
