Calls for the recognition of Ancestors’ Day still ring out loud

Castle Milk Stout calls on all like-minded people to join hands and mark Ancestors' Day on May 8 and also put pressure on the government to officially recognise the day.

As a testament to its ongoing quest to preserve and celebrate African culture and spirituality, Castle Milk Stout has made the circle bigger by extending an invite to Chapter 9 institutions to join forces in the battle for recognition of Ancestors’ Day as a public holiday.

Ancestors’ Day will be marked on May 8 and the beer brand calls on the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious, and Linguistic Communities, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and the National Heritage Council of South Africa to join the celebrations of this year’s edition.
This in a bid to amplify calls for the government to officially recognise this day as a religious holiday in line with African customs and religious beliefs.

The symposium will also serve as the 2023 commemoration of Ancestors’ Day following the inaugural celebration of the day which was held in partnership with the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa; Kgosi Milton Seatloholo, chairperson of The National House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders; and the director of Arts and Youth Development from the Department of Arts and Culture Moleleki Ledimo; and various stakeholders.

Traditional leaders and activists
Traditional leaders and activists for the recognition of Ancestors’ Day celebrate the day on May 8.

It was in 2021 that the public was invited to demonstrate their support for the official recognition of Ancestors’ Day by signing a petition on www.castlemilkstout.co.za.

“The brand is proud to be at the forefront of this quest of reawakening the African giant by savouring the richness of Africa and holding their heads, and brim with pride of being called Africans.

“We call upon those who share our vision for the official recognition of Ancestors’ Day to sign a petition on www.castlemilkstout.co.za,” said Khwezi Vika, who is the marketing manager of Castle Milk Stout.

In the past few years, the beer brand has been at the forefront of lobbying the government to grant official recognition to the day. To that end, the brand has embarked on various activities with like-minded stakeholders to put this issue in the President’s line of sight.
