Alex Jukskei River stakeholders in water governance training
NPO Khulisa Social Solutions will host a crucial workshop on February 15 designed to empower the residents and stakeholders in Alexandra and the surrounding communities about the need to rehabilitate the heavily polluted Jukskei River.
One of Johannesburg’s largest rivers, the Jukskei River, needs an urgent intervention to address the continual pollution that threatens human health, fish and bird life.
More than 700 000 residents in Alexandra and other communities who are stakeholders in the Jukskei River have been yearning for years for ways to make the river safe and sustainable and NPO Khulisa Social Solutions jumped on the opportunity to help.
Khulisa will host a workshop on February 15 that will provide high-level training on the National Water Act, including the key principles, policies, institutions, and regulatory framework governing the management and the use of raw water in South Africa.
Khulisa Founder and Managing Director Lesley-Ann van Selm said the training will endeavour to provide stakeholders, especially those affected by the Jukskei River degradation, with key insights on water governance within the South African context and the number of relevant provisions in the act such as the general duty of care in relation to water resources and when authorisation to use water is required.
The workshop will be presented by Gillian Niven, a regulatory lawyer specialising in environmental law at Allen & Overy, from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Allen & Overy offices in Sandton. Amongst the stakeholders that will be part of the workshop are members of the Alexandra Water Sanitation and Environment Community Forum.
