Old people in Alex have their ICT skills improved

In a world where everything is slowly going online grannies are given an opportunity to learn the technology.

Seventeen grandmothers at Ithlokomeleng Old Age Home received certificates from the Go-Gogo-Go organisation after graduating from an Information and communications technology (ICT) programme.

Bradley Chauke who is a facilitator and researcher at Go-Gogo-Go said the organisation aimed to empower grandmothers and grandfathers who are raising the third generation of their families.

“We have introduced the ICT programme to the gogos so they can be fast-tracked into using the technological devices. We all know since the Covid-19 pandemic, things have slowly turned online and schools are mostly sending important messages on WhatsApp, and as people [gogos] who are raising the children, they should know how to access the messages without any hassles,” Chauke said.

Chauke said they had 18 sessions with the gogos in the programme conducted twice a week.

“In our ICT programme, we teach them basics like how to turn on the phone that has a keyboard, how to type, what are applications and how they work. We also created emails with them and taught them how to send emails and online shopping if they need to.”

Graduate, Mapule Grace Phalane said, “We have learnt so much from Go-Gogo-Go and we are so thankful for the knowledge and the certificates.”
