Alex juniors take on peers in cross country

Run Alex Athletics Club has taken a giant step to finally assemble a talented array of development runners in the township in a bid to return the township to its former glory as one of the producers of talented athletes in Johannesburg.

Run Alex Athletics Club took a giant step forward on the weekend of May 21 when the club entered 25 of its junior runners in the Central Gauteng Athletics Cross Country event.

The event took place at Dobsonville Community Hall in Soweto and saw Alex junior runners taking on their peers in 1km through to 4km events.

“Our youngest juniors participated in the U8 1km event, followed by our U10s who participated in the 2km event, then U11s and U12s who locked horns with their peers in the 3km event, and finally the U13s and U14s in the 4km event,” Run Alex Athletics Club juniors director Siphiwe Nkosi told Alex News.

Juniors coach Ronny Ndhlovu said, “We are already excited and looking forward to the next event.
“This is a huge step for the club as it fits in exactly with our objectives of giving an Alex child equal opportunity and access to events that will expose their talents.”

Ndhlovu said the next cross country event would take place in Boksburg on June 4 and Run Alex would be looking to increase their number of participants.
