The river has been in the spotlight for being the hotspot for the dumping of stillborn or miscarried babies, and murdered people. The main theme of the event was educating people about the importance of keeping the river clean as it was a source of life.

“We are here in Alex today, not just to celebrate World Water Day but more importantly, as the City of Johannesburg we are here to support Alex’s residents in their endeavours to clean up the Jukskei River. The river is a very important waterway in the city of Johannesburg, we need to keep it clean… It is also a source of life for residents of Johannesburg,” Sun said.

Sun performed a symbolic clean-up of the river together with the members of Department of Water and Sanitation, Rand Water, and the Alex Water Warriors.

“We have about 240 warriors who volunteer to work here every week to make sure the river is clean… We are committed as an organisation to make sure the Jukskei is back to what it used to be, where people were fishing, swimming, and using it as a relaxation spot, not this polluted one,” said the chairperson of Alex Water Sanitation and Environment Forum Jacky Matlala.
