Alex pastors pray for peace at Pan Africa Square

ALEX – Pastor Phillip Damane of the Tsutsumani Assemblies of God church said it was paramount at this juncture of chaos to try and convert the people back to God.

A group of pastors not affiliated with any organisation descended on the Pan Africa Square to pray for peace to return at the precinct.

Pastor Stephanie Ngcobo-Nyirenda of the Johannesburg Christian Centre, based on the corner of Rev Sam Buti Street and 18th Avenue in Alexandra, said they came as independent pastors to pray for Pan following what has been happening in the sacred place for the past couple of weeks.

“I call it a sacred place because our Pan African political leaders used to gather here to share political thinking around the need to unite Africa as one. They never discriminated against our brothers from other African states and what is happening here today goes against that train of thought, where Africans are fighting each other, instead of embracing each other to strive for a united Africa.

“We decided to come here to pray to the Almighty to bring peace and stop the violence and the animosity that has infested itself in this sacred square,” Ngcobo-Nyirenda told Alex News in an interview.

She appealed to the community of Alexandra not to take the law into their own hands but to let the authorities deal with the issue or issues troubling them.

Pastor Phillip Damane of the Tsutsumani Assemblies of God church said it was paramount at this juncture of chaos to try and convert the people back to God.

“Without God on our side and in our hearts, nothing can be done,” he said.

Damane cited various scriptures of the Bible which supported his testimony and said only with God can peace return to any troubled place and land in the world.

“The scriptures say come to me (God) if your hearts are troubled and I will heal them and everything bothering you. I will also lighten the load you are carrying so you can be at peace.”

Peace seems to have returned to the Pan Africa trading square as no mobs are moving around and people are going about with their usual business.

The police presence is high as they keep monitoring the place for potential flare-ups of the violence. No Dudula members can be seen around the square for now, but anything can happen at any given time.
