New pipes to end Alex water blues

ALEXANDRA – The councillor of ward 105 says he is confident that after the work currently being done, water blues in the area will a thing of the past.

Alexandra’s water blues that have rocked the township for many years may soon be a thing of the past.

Bryanston-based company Lidwala Consulting Engineers has been contracted to lay new and bigger pipes that supply and distribute water in the area.

Alex has been facing a critical shortage of water which sometimes ran into weeks and months. Johannesburg Water established that the area needed to overhaul its pipeline which delivers water to Alex – it was found to be dilapidated and too small to deliver the required water in an overcrowded environment.

“The City [of Johannesburg] then contracted Lidwala Consulting Engineers to work on the laying of the new pipes. This replacement of the water pipeline network in the whole township would take about the year,” said Tefo Raphadu, councillor of Ward 105 where the project is currently being undertaken.

Raphadu said it was found that the water pressure was too low as the pipes had a narrow diameter with small valves that could no longer cope with the supply-demand. Hence the upgrade ‘which I hope will finally lay to rest the problems that are being experienced by the community.

“I am confident that after the work currently being done, the water woes will be a thing of the past.”
