Digify Africa marks 10 years of impact and innovation

JOBURG – Digify Africa has trained more than 100 000 young people and has built a strong footprint across the continent.

Digify Africa, which works closely with Alexandra’s SMMEs in the digital space, marked 10 years of what it called ‘impactful and innovative’ work to close the digital gap in poor communities.

Speaking at the celebration, Digify Africa’s founding CEO Gavin Weale said the purpose of the celebration was to reflect on the company’s milestones over the past 10 years and share the invaluable insights into Africa’s current digital skills landscape.

Founded in 2011, Weale said Digify Africa was a youth-led organisation that delivered impact-driven digital skills training to young people across the continent of Africa, focusing mainly on the poorest communities in a deliberate attempt to upskill those lagging behind in the digital space.

He said the organisation offered various free training programmes that spoke to different training needs. One such training programme was Digify PRO, an award-winning digital skills boot camp that allowed participants to acquire demand-driven digital marketing skills to enable them to enter the high-value career paths in the digital marketing industry.

The other programme was Boost with Facebook, which sought to support SMMEs through free training workshops that offered practical skills to utilise social media tools such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Business for business growth.

Weale also outlined Ilizwe Lam (My Space), which is an online safety programme delivered in high schools across South Africa, and promoted safe internet use among teens, helping them navigate their online environment better.

So far Weale said Digify Africa had trained more than 100 000 young people and had built a strong footprint across the continent with its programmes running in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.

Over the past 10 years, the organisation had sought to empower Africa’s youth with the tools they needed to take advantage of the opportunities of the digital world, create sustainable livelihoods, and thrive in today’s digital economy.
