ANALYSIS: Alex historian deplores the ongoing looting

ALEX – The custodian of the cultural history of Alexandra has called on his fellow residents to desist from the current ongoing acts of looting.

Alex historian Thabo Mopasi has deplored the current looting of shops, malls, spazas and other food outlets in Alexandra, including the looting of Alex FM of more than R5-million worth of broadcast equipment.

Speaking to Alex News from his Sankopano office, Mopasi called on the community to desist from acts of lawlessness and looting, claiming it was detrimental to their own well-being. “Those shops and institutions they are targeting are servicing them, providing them with much-needed food and other essential items,” he said.

“If they are looted and can no longer be able to provide those needed services, what happens? Who goes hungry and who will cry first to say there is no service delivery etcetera? It is the very same looters that will cry first and want to protest yet again and even burn down many more other institutions.”

Mopasi said the ongoing debate on the community radio station around the Public Protector’s and Human Rights’ report should not become attempts to exonerate and deflect what he described as ‘Alex Mafia’ in what he claimed to be ‘its disdainful acts of wanting to keep the community of Alexandra in the dark over its bad deeds’.

Mopasi explained that Alex FM was understood to be spearheading public debate on the recently released report that is said to have incriminated the so-called ‘Alex Mafia’ in the shenanigans of a whole range of issues in the township such as the alleged failure of the Alexandra Renewal Project (ARP), allocations of houses and the alleged looting of the coffers of the ARP.

“We want all the people to debate the report and allow all the dirt to come out for all to see and have an understanding of what happened behind the walls of offices of the ARP,” Mopasi said.

Alex News is in possession of a copy of the detailed report, and readers can keep an eye out for more from this publication regarding this voluminous document.
