City of Joburg connects 84 free Wi-Fi hotspots across Joburg

JOBURG – All the Joburg Wifi run on solar power and are manned by the City of Johannesburg's broadband company Metropolitan Trading Company.

The City has connected 84 free Wi-Fi hotspots between Region A and G in a bid to optimise the use of technology to improve the general quality of life of its residents.

With more than 1 000km of fibre optic wire laid out across all quadrants of Johannesburg, Joburg Wi-Fi‘s hotspots offer each single device 500MB of data a day, allowing users to surf and download at a speed of 5MBp.

“All the Joburg Wi-Fi runs on solar power and are manned by the City of Johannesburg’s broadband company Metropolitan Trading Company,” the City said in a tweet.

The City furthermore said this was to enable residents free access to online municipal services, economic opportunities and academic material, especially for young people.

R40 million was allocated from the 2020/2021 Joburg budget for the roll-out of the free Joburg Wi-Fi hotspots including hostels, flats, student villages and old age homes.
