According to City Power, illegal connections are the cause of overloading on their network which has led to many outages across Johannesburg since the start of winter.

City Power said that illegal connections were cut off to close to 200 homes on the day. The operation was supported by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), South African Police Service (SAPS) and South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said if any person gets caught connecting electricity illegally, or stealing electricity cables, then such a person can be arrested and charged for theft and will have to appear before the court for such crime.
