High school in Alex believed to have temporarily closed due to positive Covid-19 case

ALEXANDRA – Parents will be informed when learners can return to school through SMSes and Whatsapp messages.

The Alex News has been made aware of a letter, believed to be from the principal of a school in Alexandra addressed to parents/guardians which informed of a positive case of Covid-19 at the school.

The Alex News team believes the letter to be authentic – having received it from reliable sources – and, upon calling the school, found the phone to just ring indicating it was closed. The team, therefore, could not get comment, however, the story will be updated as soon as comment is received.

The letter in Alex News‘ possession reads, “Kindly be informed that one positive case of Covid-19 has been reported in our school today (22 June).”

In the letter, the principal reportedly states the school would be closed and decontaminated until further notice. Parents will be informed when learners can return to school through SMS and WhatsApp messages, the letter further stated.

The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, would not confirm a Covid-19 case at any specific school but, with regards to the spread of Covid-19 within school premises, he said the department would like to re-emphasise that everyone must conform to Covid-19 protocols. This includes wearing a mask, sanitising and washing hands frequently, keeping physical distance and staying safe.

“Parents and the community must at times avoid visiting our schools. All principals are empowered on what to do in the event of a Covid-19 case at their schools. We are working closely with the Department Health which provides us with guidance, especially with decisions to temporarily close or not to close a school,” advised Mabona.

This story will be updated as soon as further information is received.
