IN PICTURES: Food and spiritual support for those Alex residents in need

ALEXANDRA – Many in Alex are still in need.

The numbers of destitute people in Alexandra who are desperate for food and spiritual support increases with the daily nationwide spread of the coronavirus.

Philemon Matome of church-based non-profit organisation (NPO) Blessed Is the Hand That Gives, which provides homework study and feeding programmes to children including on holidays, said more people of all ages are flocking in for help.

“A donation from NPO God’s Leaves and Wahl Group supports more than 400 beneficiaries with bread daily from an initial 100 at the beginning of the scourge and provides 125 families with vegetables twice a week.”

Matome appealed for more like-minded partnerships to help, saying the numbers of those in need will increase exponentially from job losses when businesses become non-viable due to the virus.

The call has been heeded by Sunninghill-based Real Life Church, which has been assisting in the township.

Their most recent donation was 100 food parcels which were distributed to the needy in Extension 7 by councillor Shadrack Mkhonto.

“More is still needed for 450 more deserving beneficiaries who still haven’t received any food packs since their names were submitted to social development a while ago,” Mkhonto said.

He thanked the donors, saying, “I feel proud to be part of your giving hand. I sleep well at night when I know that some of the hungry and needy people in Alex have food for several days.”
