One death is too many – Makhubo

ALEXANDRA – Mayor condemns violence, violation of residents' rights during lockdown

Joburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo urged for people to be protected and not abused during the lockdown period.

Makhubo said this in a statement after sending his condolences to the family of Collins Khoza of East Bank who died after being assaulted, allegedly by members of the South African National Defence Force on 13 April.

A murder case had been opened with the police who are investigating the incident and there have been no arrests. “We console and assure the family of our support at this difficult period,” he said. “One death is a death too many. Our people must be protected and not abused.”

The mayor added that he had met with the local leadership of the police on the matter and reiterated to them President Cyril Ramaphosa’s message to the army, police and Metro police that they should serve, enforce the law and protect citizens against the invisible enemy which is Covid-19.

“We condemn entirely any acts of violence and violation of the rights of residents of the city,” added Makhubo. “Also, we plead and urge residents to comply with the regulations, respond responsibly to lawful instructions from law enforcement to the best of their abilities, and shy away from impeding the work of government during this period.”

Makhubo commended the support offered to the family of the deceased by councillors pending Khoza’s funeral.
