Fake news, violate coronavirus curfew at own risk

ALEXANDRA – Councillor, ward committee members' homes no go areas during lockdown

Stop spreading fake news, no parties, all events must be cancelled, stay safe and adhere to mitigation measures against the coronavirus pandemic in the next 21 days.

This was the warning to Alex residents from Ward 116 Councillor Adolph Marema for the national lockdown period to contain the spread of the virus. There are fears of the virus’s negative effects on the overcrowded township who are more vulnerable through compromised health and hygiene conditions.

In an open letter, Marema advised those with pending funerals to seek authority from the police as councillors won’t be able to help. “We also will be indoors until 16th April in order to minimise the impact and infection of the virus,” the letter read.

He urged those requiring urgent support to contact him and ward committee members through the ward WhatsApp group, telephonically and by email. “Visits to our homes are prohibited for the 21 days from midnight 26 March.”

He further advised that service delivery would also be hampered with city council offices operating on a skeleton staff. “Ward projects like the normalisation of electricity and rehabilitating of Joe Nhlanhla Avenue bridge are suspended and we will keep the community informed of any changes and developments.”
