Alexandra beauty queen gives up Mrs Commonwealth title to pursue personal development goals
ALEXANDRA – This will give me an opportunity to progress in my grandest vision so that I can become the best version of myself.
On 16 August last year, Alex community activist and mother of two, Fortunate Twala was crowned Mrs Commonwealth SA 2019/20 in a prestigious beauty pageant competition event held at Gold Reef City, south of Johannesburg.
On 29 February this year, Twala announced that she had decided to step down as the reigning Mrs Commonwealth to pursue what she described as a new journey towards her personal development goals.
“This year, in February, I found another forum that can propel and stimulate me to the next level in my journey of development and growth. Unfortunately, Mrs Commonwealth SA Pageant prevented me from taking up this opportunity thus I have made the decision to sacrifice the title and step down,” she said.
“This will give me an opportunity to progress in my grandest vision so that I can become the best version of myself. I will continue with my work of community development in Alex and I implore all those who supported me in my journey as Mrs Commonwealth SA to accept my decision as I enter into my new journey. At the end of the day, such a bold decision had to be taken for the sake of my personal growth and development.”

A Commonwealth Pageants South Africa official who asked not to be named said the organisation had asked Twala to step down because she wanted to participate in a different beauty pageant competition.
“We asked Fortunate Twala, who was our reigning queen to step down because she overstepped and broke one of our rules not to participate in other competitions while you are the reigning queen. We wish her all the best in her new journey,” she said.
