Ops manager on attempted murder charge

ALEXANDRA – Night club attempted murder accused pleads self-defence.

A man said to be a company operations manager is appearing in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for alleged attempted murder.

In mitigation, the accused who is out on bail claimed that he fired shots from his licensed gun at a group of men in self-defence after they attacked him at a night club on Gwen Lane, Sandown in November last year.

One of the alleged attackers survived gunshot wounds to the chest and stomach. The group said to have been relatives and others approached the accused who was with a woman, and for unspecified reasons, a commotion ensued between the accused and the group. The accused fled to his vehicle which was parked outside while bottles, chairs and other items were being thrown at him by the group. He drew out his gun and shot at the group, apparently in self-defence.

The injured victim collapsed on the scene and was taken to hospital for treatment while the accused who had driven away was traced and arrested. The victim’s evidence was that he approached the accused who was in his vehicle that was parked outside the club to seek an explanation for an injury inflicted on his nephew by the accused and others. He claimed the accused got out his vehicle armed and shot at him. He staggered away and collapsed and was taken in an Uber to hospital for treatment.
