Restaurant for social cohesion

ALEXANDRA – Siga Culinary is on the rise and professional Chef Gift Sedibeng, thanked the media for profiling their potential, more of which is still in store from them.

Popular Texan steaks and Mexican cuisines mixed with signature kasi dishes will give rise to the mother of all townships’ own Vilakazi Street.

This is in the plans of proprietors of Siga Culinary (Restaurant), on East Bank Drive, Alexandra which is on a drive to emulate Soweto’s spot renowned for its eateries and tourism. “The street is wide and perfect for this venture in a township famed for its own slice, quarter, braai and other savoury plates attractive to tourists. What more when they are mixed with other nation’s famed dishes,” said professional Chef Gift Sedibeng who owns the joint with sister, Sharon.

His love for Mexican cuisines and the famed US steaks set him off to San Antonio, the USA for a year, returning with a broadened knowledge of the industry he said can propel township tourism. “Already, foreign and local tourists who come to savour our dishes leave satisfied, including the sceptic who come thinking we are a gimmick.”

Siga is on the rise and he thanked the media for profiling their potential, more of which is still in store from them and others he encourages to mushroom along the street to make their dream come true. “Similar initiatives in other townships should also emerge with various nationalities’ dishes,” Sedibeng said of ventures he sees with potential to dent spiralling unemployment and also promote global social cohesion.

He regards the ‘dream’ as a lying giant which can ably compete with the Sandtons of this world. “We are up for the competition that will leave the patrons asking for more through the seat-in arrangement and delivery service we intend embarking on together with an adjacent car wash service of a colleague.”

Siga’s patrons trickle in weekly at daytime and after work between 11am and 9pm from Tuesday to Sunday. “It’s their place to also just engage and leave satisfied from our affordable range of dishes.”

They intend expanding into a double-storey at the right time and to give back to the township through cooking lessons. They recently partnered with others through a campaign which donated school items to needy children at McWeiler Primary School.
