Stokvels warned to safeguard info on dividends

ALEXANDRA – Beneficiaries are warned to spend early grants wisely before the next payout.

Many families will rue the festive season after losing their income and dividends saved throughout the year to criminals.

DA proportional representative councillor Shadrack Mkhonto warned, “They [criminals] are lurking everywhere and ready to pounce on those who lower their guard at ATMs, while shopping, walking with lots of money and dividends taken from banks for sharing among Stokvel members.”Those who feel compelled to draw money from an ATM should do so at ATMs that are safe and should not let anyone help them but, draw from inside the bank.” He urged recipients of early grant payments to spend cautiously. “It will be long before the next payout. They should also be accompanied by trusted relatives or community members when drawing money to purchase their basic essentials from shops.”

He implored Stokvel members to be extra vigilant with their dividends. “Rather arrange with banks to transfer to members’ accounts. Where it is necessary to share cash, only the chairperson, treasurer and secretary should know when such an arrangement will be effected,” he said. “This will stop members who are criminally inclined from tipping off a criminal syndicate prying for those who will be carrying lots of cash.”

He also urged residents to ensure their homes are safe at all times, especially when going away.
