Late Croesus Ladies chairperson buried at Avalon Cemetery in Soweto

ALEXANDRA – Edison Mbatha, the late founding chairperson of Croesus Ladies was finally laid to rest at the Avalon Cemetery in Soweto on 2 November.


The late founding chairperson of Croesus Ladies, Edison Mbatha (46), who collapsed and died at his Yeoville home on 21 October, was buried at the Avalon Cemetery in Soweto on 2 November.

Team manager Maria Athanassouli confirmed to Alex News the enterprising founder of the Balfour Park-based Greek Queens, as Croesus Ladies is also popularly known in the Gauteng Sasol Women’s League where they ply their trade, was laid to rest in Soweto and not his birthplace of Botswana.

Coach Eric, as Mbatha was fondly known to his players and in the football fraternity, founded the Greek Queens 18 years ago as Hillbrow Ladies after assembling a team of women footballers consisting of local prostitutes. He also owned two boys’ teams, Polokwane Rovers and Black Mask which ply their trade in the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association. His goal was to keep both young girls and boys off the streets and away from mischief.

The postmortem results are being awaited.
