The King and Queen of Alex primary schools football will be crowned on 30 October

ALEXANDRA – It's D-Day on 30 October when the Discovery Alex U12 Schools League comes to a head at the Number 3 Square Grounds.

The annual Discovery Alex U12 Schools League which has been running since 4 September comes to a close on 30 October when the King and Queen of Alex primary schools football will be crowned.

Reigning King MC Weiler Primary School will be up against Dr Knak Primary School in the boys’ section, hoping to break another record of being the first school to successfully defend the trophy twice in a row.

The school already holds the record of being the first to successfully defend the cup when they won it again in 2017 after their maiden win in 2015, then successfully defended it in 2018, and are now on course to defend it for the second time in a row.

When they first won in 2015 they were up against Dr Knak, the same team they will meet this time around. Incidentally, MC Weiler is up against Dr Knak in the girls’ section as well to decide the diski Queen.

The finals will be played at the Number 3 Square Ground and the tournament will also finalise the positional play-offs for the township’s 12 primary schools on the same day, some of whose games were played last week Wednesday already.

In true championship style, the MC Weiler boys came out of the group games unscathed, having won most of their matches with only one draw and then went on to annihilate all their opponents in the quarter- and semi-finals to book themselves a spot in the Wednesday finals.

On the other hand, the Dr Knak boys had an unblemished record in the group stages, having won all their five games plus the two in the quarter- and semi-finals to confirm their spot in the finals. Judging from their performance in the group stages which translated to the knockout phase, Dr Knak seems to hold an upper hand as favourites to lift the trophy.

This is because the school’s boys’ team managed to win all their seven matches, five in the group stages and two in the knockout phase while their finalist counterparts from MC Weiler won four of their group stage matches and drew one, and then went on to win all two of their knockout phase matches.

No matter what the performance was in both schools’ group and knockout phases, the final performance on 30 October will decide which school gets to lift the trophy. And whether it’s going to be Dr Knak to write its name on the trophy for the very first time or MC Weiler for a cool fourth time – that part of the puzzle will be pieced together at the Number 3 Square Ground on Wednesday.
