Robbery victim tracks and nabs accused and recovers his items

ALEXANDRA – The accused was apprehended by the victim assisted by community members who responded to his plea for help.

 


The case of an accused robber who was apprehended by the victim with the community’s assistance, has been postponed to 30 October by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation.

Nkosinathi Gumede, who admitted to the offence, was apprehended as he and three others, still at large, fled when the victim confronted them.

They allegedly pounced on the victim at dawn on 19 September at the intersection of 6th and Alfred Nzo avenues as he was walking to work. The accused used what was later determined to be toy gun and ordered the victim to raise his hands. The accomplices searched the victim’s pockets and took a cell phone worth R550 and a wallet containing R700 in cash, bank cards and a drivers licence and then left him.

The victim returned home to leave a backpack they had ignored and went after the robbers who he spotted on 2nd Avenue. When he grabbed the accused, who still had the firearm, the accomplices fled. They tussled and the victim recovered his phone and R200 in cash – the accused claimed that the rest of the money was with his accomplices. The accused many to get free and fled, however, he was apprehended by the victim assisted by community members who responded to his plea for help. He was handed over to the police after some mob justice was meted on him.
