Alexandra Gunners Football Club hosts five aside soccer tournament to raise funds

ALEXANDRA– Alexandra community members and football lovers came in their numbers to this year's soccer tournament aimed at raising funds for community charity work.

The Lenasia-based 5-a-side football club, Montpeiller were crowned this year’s champions of the fourth annual Alexandra Gunners Play to Learn Soccer Tournament held at Alex Mall.

Community members and football lovers came in their numbers to support this year’s soccer tournament aimed at raising funds for community charity work.

Stanley Makhubela of Alexandra Gunners said the tournament was the brain child of the team’s management who saw a need to give back to the community.

“The aim of the tournament is to raise funds to build a computer centre in which local youngsters can be taught different IT courses like coding and a lot more,” he said.

“Not every player will make it to the professional level, hence we decided to introduce this initiative as a team to empower our players in many ways. The centre is currently up and running at the premises of MC Weiller Primary School and we want to build a centre that will be big enough to cater for all those interested in learning IT, not only the players, but even those who are out there doing nothing after school.

“Today we have 16 teams participating in the tournament from all over Johannesburg. We are hoping that by next year we will achieve our goal to have a centre that these youngsters can call home and have enough space and time to learn.”

Montpeiller pocketed R6 500 after beating Football Flava in the final on penalties after the teams were level at 1–1 after regulation time. Flava earned R1 000 for their efforts.
