School of Excellence are Gauteng provincial champions of the Copa Coca-Cola 2019

JOBURG -– The 2019 national finals of the COPA Coca Cola Cup will take place at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban, from 18 to 21 September.

The School of Excellence will represent Gauteng in the Copa Coca-Cola national finals taking place at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban, from 18 to 21 September.

The newly crowned provincial champions will head into the national finals with their heads held high after overcoming former champions Clapham High School 5–4 on penalties. This after the teams were deadlocked 0–0 in regulation time in a match played at Mehlareng Stadium in Johannesburg which was a repeat of last year’s Gauteng final.

The School of Excellence secured victory in all their group matches before venturing into the mouthwatering grudge encounter with the former champions who beat them in last year’s final, also in a penalty shootout.

Competition ambassador Khulekani Kubheka, who won the tournament with his former school Clapham in 2014 and is a Mamelodi Sundowns development player, paid tribute to the School of Excellence for clinching the trophy in the Gauteng provincial finals and wished them luck in the national finals.

“A huge congratulations to the School of Excellence for winning this year’s Gauteng finals,” he said. “I remember how competitive this fixture used to be while I was still at school and I am glad that the competitiveness is just as high. What impressively stands out for me is how the organisers have managed to maintain the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play even in such competitive matches.”

All roads now lead to the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban, for the national finals and may the best province and team win, he added.
