American teacher donates 10 brand new laptops to the local school

ALEXANDRA –'I've always wanted to help people who aspire to do great things and needed just a little push to achieve that goal'

The principal of Alexandra High School Zoleka Lebelo has praised an American teacher and businesswoman after she donated 10 brand-new laptops and $15 000 (R22 691,55) for renovations to the school.

Lebelo said its rare these days to find people who help people without expecting something in return. “We are very grateful for the donations from Kendra. It is unlikely these days to find people doing something expecting nothing in return. She came all the way from the USA to visit saw a need to give back the community she didn’t know. We will strengthen our working relationship with her to ensure that her dream to help an African child is realised.”

Kendra Martin came to South Africa for a vacation with a group of friends last year and was visiting Alexandra township to learn more about the history of the country and the life of the first democratic president Nelson Mandela when an app-based taxi driver told her about the school.

“I’ve always wanted to help people who aspire to do great things and needed just a little push to achieve that goal. During my first visit in South Africa last year as I was driving around the hood, my Uber driver told me about the school and introduced me to the school principal, after I told him that I wanted to get a local school that I would establish a working relationship with it,” she explained.

“I met principal Lebelo and the school management to share my dream with them. I told them that I did not know what kind of help I was going to offer the school. When I got home in America, I shared the idea with a group of friends who agreed to lend a helping hand. Today, we’ve donated $15 000 [US dollars] and 10 laptops as a start.”

Martin has also urged learners at the school to work hard and keep on dreaming to achieve great things in their lives.
