Church adds its weight against gender and child abuse

ALEXANDRA – Men to voice their NO on women and child abuse.

The problem of gender-based and child violence in Alex should be exposed more among men where it matters the most.

This in order to get them to emulate others in tackling the challenge also perpetrated in intimate partnerships including within the religious community. The Kingdom Mandate Ministries International is joining the effort of others before it, including NPO Men For Change whose weekly programmes on awareness in men about the scourge featured in Alex News recently. Also, after previous coverage of crime imbizos (gatherings) convened by the police on unrelenting crime and violence and years of work by local NPOs on gender-based violence.

The spiritual custodians will convene a march for all concerned men around the streets of Alex to coincide with Women’s Month. “It will be a peaceful event under the name Men March for Good, against the social ills in our township including women and children abuse, crime, drug abuse, violence and others.

“We call on men to stand up especially in women’s month to add to a voice against all forms of abuse, specifically against women and children,” Pastor Sifiso Twala said.

The event will start at 12 noon at number 41 on 3rd Avenue. “We want to convey messages that say ‘enough is enough’ and no more to all ills caused by men in our community and nationally,” Twala said.

He added that the idea started from a conversation in the church’s programme on fathers grooming sons to be responsible men for the future. “A decision was reached to practise this commitment to Women’s Month to show solidarity with victims of abuse by men.

“Every second, a woman or child is victimised through abuse, crime and violence perpetrated by men 90 per cent of the time while good men stand by and do nothing.”

The march, he said, will show that it was time for them to stand up and be counted in the interest of the victims who are their neighbours, mothers, sisters an children. “It’s befitting that we close this important month by giving them a platform to express a firm message which will encourage men, in general, to take a conscious stand against the abuse practically every day.”

The initiative will complement the church’s weekly radio show that empowers and motivates the men to be more responsible to their families and the community.
