AVR failure postpones student’s murder case

ALEXANDRA – Murder accused further remanded in custody.

A malfunctioning audio-visual recording system resulted in the postponement of a hearing of a student charged with murder by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court .

The IT student, Napo Masite (25) a Lesotho national who is charged with the murder on 4 May of a 44-year-old victim, will be back in court on 27 August.

The incident has been reported on several times in Alex News. The victim, who was a friend to the accused’s sister and a mother to a nine-year-old boy, died at his place in a Midrand complex. Police found her body dumped in a bin in a nearby bush. He had tried to convince an Uber taxi driver to help him remove the body. The driver refused and reported him to the Midrand Police station leading to his arrest.

He claimed the victim died when he, in self-defence, choked her during a drug-and-alcohol-fuelled altercation. A pillow case matching his bedding was also found in the bin. The accused is also said to be wanted for alleged rape in his home country which has requested his extradition and in India for a similar offence.

Meanwhile, DNA results are also awaited, linked to suspicion that the victim could have been sexually violated.

Due to its gravity, the case may be transferred to the South Gauteng High Court.
