Conman’s greed gets the better of him

ALEXANDRA – Man's second chance at estate fraud ends.

A conman of a deceased estate is appearing in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for repeated fraud.

The accused who was remanded in custody was arrested by the police at a bank where the officials trapped him as he tried for the second time to defraud a family of their deceased relative’s estate.

The man acquired an Executorship Certificate for the deceased estate fraudulently from the Department of Justice and Correctional Service. He took the certificate to a bank where an official processed R188 000 in cash from the estate to him.

When the deceased’s relatives sought the certificate from the department, they were told that it had already been issued. Sensing the fraud, the department raised an alert with the bank which froze all remaining parts of the estate. The fraudster who seemingly knew of the balance went to another branch of the department seeking another certificate. This triggered the alert and the police were called and he was arrested.
