JOHANNESBURG – Alexandra and Soweto Field Bands and the Parktown Boys' Brass Band are set to entertain the crowds at the FNB Joburg 10K CityRun.

Celebrating its 4th anniversary on 24 September, the FNB Joburg 10K CityRun has become known for its exciting route entertainment.

This year’s event will be no different with the Alexandra and Soweto Field Bands and Parktown Boys’ Brass Band secured and ready to entertain the masses on National Heritage Day, 24 September.

The Field Band Foundation is a non-profit company that aims to use the marching band to provide critical life-skills to young people from under-resourced areas in seven of South Africa’s nine provinces. The band members are between 10 to 21 years old.

The Field Band’s foundation communications and events officer Refilwe Pico, said, “The Soweto Field Band was established in 1997, while the Alexandra Field Band was established in 2000. Both bands will be seen in action at the 2019 FNB Joburg 10K CityRun.

“This will be our fourth year performing at the FNB Joburg 10K CityRun. We are excited about this because such events give our members the opportunity to showcase their musical and dancing skills. Being part of this event has been a fun and eye-opening experience for our members and we are looking forward to contributing to the ambience on event day.”

While spectators cheer for runners, Pico said they will encourage them with music and dance. She said runners (and spectators) can look forward to a vibrant, entertaining and participatory musical and dance experience that is sure to add flavour to this year’s run.

Also celebrating their fourth appearance at the run, Parktown Boys’ High School has a reputation for excellence in music as an extra-curricular activity.

According to Godfrey Bell, master in charge of the Parktown Boys’ High School Band, the school has a rich heritage and vibrant band. “The band comprises of boys between the ages 13 to 17 years old, with every learner being musically talented.

“All students are taught to play brass and reed instruments, as well as drums when they enter the school in Grade 8.”

Bell added that they have been participating in the run for the past four years and they looks forward to upholding and improving on their performance when entertaining the runners.

Starting in front of FNB Bank City, runners (and walkers) will be treated to a 10km route experience that will highlight iconic landmarks including the Nelson Mandela Bridge, FNB Bank City, Constitution Hill, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Wits University and Ellis Park Stadium to mention just a few.
