New Alex Hospice to bring hope to terminally ill
ALEXANDRA – The Johannesburg Development Agency started the detailed design development for the construction of the Alexandra Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre.
The Johannesburg Development Agency has kick-started the detailed design development for the construction of the Alexandra Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre, previously known as the Banakekeleni Hospice.
The non-profit hospice is the only facility of its kind in the township and takes care of 30 terminally ill patients in the area. The MMC for Development Planning Reuben Masango said the hospice infrastructure would consist of a 48-bed frail care facility, with 12 wards located on the ground floor, dining and recreation areas, professional consultation rooms, administration and offices, a hospice garden and wall of remembrance.
“This new facility forms part of the key City of Joburg Priority Programmes aimed at ensuring pro-poor developments to address inequality and poverty, and provide meaningful redress to all affected residents,” said Masango.
Masango added that the hospice would also feature 16 dedicated parking spaces and a drop-off bay, a guardhouse, boom gate access, services store and waste collection area.
The facility is currently and will continue to be run by the NPO, Alexandra Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre on City-owned land. Local labourers will be appointed and trained during the construction phase of the development project.
