Greek Queens crush the not so fabulous Soweto Fabulous Ladies

BALFOUR PARK – Croesus Ladies cruise to victory with a 3-1 scoreline over Soweto Fabulous Ladies.

Soweto Fabulous Ladies proved not to be so fabulous when they allowed a slick Croesus Ladies to run riot against them to collect maximum points from this Sasol Women’s League encounter.

The Greek Queens, as the Balfour-based Croesus outfit are popularly known, cruised to 3–1 win as they crushed the Soweto side in a match played at Northview High School which has become somewhat of a fortress for the Greek Queens.

The Greek Queens made their intentions clear as early as the 13th minute when Zandile Mxasa benefited from a free kick when the ball landed at the feet of the evergreen Lerato ‘Livewire’ Ruele on the left flank who then crossed the ball for Mxasa to slot it into the back of the net.

In less than five minutes of the opening goal, Mxasa was at it again when she struck a beauty that she lopped over the keeper to grab her brace in what had become a one-sided game in the first half.

Ruele, also known as Pele to her teammates, could have increased her team’s lead to 3–0 when she again tried to lop the ball over the advancing keeper but her effort was overcooked as it went over the crossbar.

Pele has such excellent ball control and trickery as she pulled a shibobo on her Fabulous counterpart and then thundered a shot towards the goalmouth from an acute angle that found no one to tap it into the back of the net and the two teams went for a pep talk with Greek Queens leading 2–0.

The second stanza belonged to Fabulous as they threw all they had in search of goals, including substituting a substitute, and the efforts paid off when the Greek Queens keeper fouled a Fabulous striker in the box and the referee never hesitated in pointing to the penalty spot.

That was how the Fabulous Ladies managed to pull one back but that joy was short-lived as Pele added salt to Fabulous’ injury in the 80th minute with a goal of her own. Her teammate, Simphiwe ‘Stew’ Masina, could have added a fourth goal if she did not fluff a golden opportunity just before the referee blew his final whistle.

Greek Queens skipper Katrina ‘Kat’ Maguire said they were lucky to have survived the second half onslaught from Fabulous who showed some grit after halftime. “I am disappointed though as I feel the referee just gifted them an unwarranted penalty and yellow card to our keeper,” she added.

“The Fabulous striker had stood over the ball as our keeper tried to flush it out from danger and the player just fell to the ground with no contact at all. But nevertheless, I am happy we beat them and collected the maximum points on our journey to topple second-placed JVW Ladies.”
