The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that it will hold by-elections in all municipal wards where councillors have left their positions due to a variety of reasons countrywide on 24 July this year, with special votes taking place on 23 July.
One of those wards where residents will have the opportunity to elect a community immediate authority is Ward 109.
The by-elections in the ward come after the resignation of former Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Werner Smit resigned as a councillor earlier this year.
The DA’s candidate Sabatin Shongwe has urged residents and community members of Ward 109 to vote in the by-elections.
“The by-election is due to the resignation of councillor Smit, who has taken up a post with Iron Man South Africa which has been a passion for him. Former councillor Smit, prior to vacating his position, took me through the ward and discussed key issues and challenges, with the hope of a seamless transition into the balance of the municipal election cycle,” he said.
He said the new voters will have to visit the IEC office at Region E Daisy Street Sandton or 8th Avenue Alexandra IEC Office to register.
