Zoe Nation and Supermama movie stars donate winter blankets to Banakekeleni

MARLBORO– Syabonga Mtshali said he is inspired by giving back to the community.

The non-profit organisation Zoe Nation in partnership with the stars of The Adventures of Supermama, a short film that was shot in Alexandra, visited Banakekeleni Children Youth Care Centre in Marlboro to donate dozens of blankets for the children.

Khanyi Madlala, the founder of the organisation that was established to help the needy and those affected by disasters, said she chose Banakekeleni Centre, which houses almost 20 children, because it is located in the heart of the township where the film was shot.

Fifteen-year-old Syabonga Mtshali, who plays the role of Dumisani in e.tv’s soapie Rhythm City, said he finds inspiration in giving back to the community, especially the needy, who sometimes go for days without having a proper meal.

“Initiatives like this make me realise the importance of lending a helping hand and contributing in changing the fortunes of those who have nothing. When one gives back to the community, one actually invests in the better future of our nation and that should not be taken for granted,” Mtshali said.

Michael Mabizela, who grew up in Alexandra and who plays the role of Doris’s husband Jabulani in the film, urged the youth to focus on their dreams and stay away from alcohol and substance abuse.

The treasurer at the centre, Nompumelelo Miya, urged businesses to help through financial and food donations.

“Our centre is struggling, especially to pay the stipends of staff members who help with day-to-day work, like cooking, washing and taking care of the children. We are pleading with business people and those individuals who can help us to keep these children in a warm home,” Miya said.
