City of Johannesburg takes A Re Sebetseng to Minerva High School

ALEXANDRA – Grade 9 tourism and geography learners led by their teacher, together with City and hotel staff members cleaned up the schoolyard and surrounding streets.

The City of Johannesburg Region E staff members in collaboration with Hilton Hotel recently took the City’s A Re Sebetseng cleaning project to Minerva High School in Alexandra.

Scores of Grade 9 tourism and geography learners led by their teacher Lennox Mashego joined forces with City and hotel staff members to clean up the schoolyard and streets around the school.

A Re Sebetseng is a City of Joburg cleaning campaign that strives to encourage all of Johannesburg’s residents to take care of the environment and seeks to promote a culture of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste to ensure that Johannesburg becomes one of the cleanest cities in Africa.

Speaking to the learners during environmental education and awareness session held in school premises after the cleaning campaign, Region E director Liziwe-Ntshinga Makgoro told learners to become good ambassadors of the environment. “As tourism learners in the school, you must be at a forefront of advocating clean environment. For us to have a clean city with clean neighbourhoods it all depends on you. You must become environmental ambassadors here in the school and at home. Teach your peers about the importance of a clean environment,” Makgoro said.

Tourism and geography teacher and the coordinator of the A Re Sebetseng project at the school Lennox Mashego lauded the City for initiating the programme that involves schoolchildren. “This project will not only help us keep our school clean but it will also help our learners with their schoolwork. The project will help [and] expose our learners to the realities and dangers of littering to the environment,” Mashego said.
