Norwood Police Station acting head address major crimes

NORWOOD - Vehicle-related crime remains a major problem in the suburbs.

Two major positions at the Norwood Police Station remain temporarily vacant but the acting head is adamant that the station is functional.

The station is currently headed by acting Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Jan Sithole and the vacant communications officer position is being filled by the acting cluster spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyayi of the Jeppe police.

Incumbent Station Commander Colonel Anna Jojisa has been on sick leave since October last year while the position of communications officer became vacant after Captain Elliot Tshivhase retired on 29 March this year.

In an exclusive interview with North Eastern Tribune, Sithole said the station was functioning normally and officers continued to do their jobs effectively.

“I first came here at the station as a branch commander in April 2018 and the province then assigned me to head the station after Jojisa became very ill,” said Sithole.

“As for the spokesperson’s position, we have directed that task to our acting cluster spokesperson Munyayi. We still need to advertise the position to officially fill it but in the meantime, we have Munyayi to assist us.”

Since taking up his duties as acting head of the station, Sithole said vehicle-related crimes, domestic violence, and business and house robberies have been identified as the most problematic.

He added that they were putting adequate plans in place to counter these crimes and ensure that the community remained safe.

“Vehicle-related crimes such as smash-and-grab are fuelled by the victims themselves because they tend to leave their valuables exposed when they leave their cars and that is the problem.

“We continuously educate people but they fail to heed our call, so we need the input from our community because alone we cannot fight this crime.”

Sithole concluded that they continued to deploy vehicles on patrol to ensure police visibility at all times.

Details: Norwood Police Station 10111.
