Johannesburg Metro police K9 Unit members come up trumps in SA Working Dog competition at Cluny Farm

JOBURG – The dogs are used by the Johannesburg Metro police for patrolling purposes but they are also used by the K9 officers.

For the first time, the Johannesburg Metro police members took part in the South African Working Dog competition that was held this weekend at Cluny Farm in Sun Valley.

A statement issued by Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent, Wayne Minnaar, read, “Metro police officers Donald Nkosi and Thabo Mailula competed in explosive detection; and Metro police officers Sheree Booysen and Philton Peterson qualified for the South African Working Dog national championship which will be held later this year.”

Chief of Johannesburg Metro police, David Tembe, thanked the members for representing the men and women of the Johannesburg Metro police, and for representing the City of Johannesburg.

Full-time instructor in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Academy, Peter September, trained Booysen and Peterson alongside his three-year-old German Shepherd, Giyana. Giyana is the current South African Working Dog Champion in Narcotics Substance Detection.

Minnaar said that the dogs are used by the Johannesburg Metro police for patrolling purposes but they are also used by the K9 officers.

“We want the dogs to take place in the competitions because it enhances their skills; so, say there’s a bomb scare at the mall, we then use the dogs to search for the bomb,” said Minnaar.

The dogs are also said to be used when there has been a report on any illegal activities. “We use these dogs to sniff out drugs at various locations, including schools and night clubs,” said Wayne Minnaar.

The championship will be held in September this year.
