MEC commends police for scores of arrests made during operations

Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has lauded the police for sterling work after about 74 suspects were arrested for various crimes during recent intelligence led operations in the province. 

Police have arrested five suspects on 21 February, linked to the Edenvale High School robbery where R8 000 belonging to the school was taken. Two other suspects were fatally wounded and one was shot and injured.

Furthermore, five firearms were recovered including riffles and three pistols. All the arrests took place in Edenvale where a further six suspects were also arrested for airport following leading to the recovery of four firearms. Two fatalities were reported in connection with the airport following incident.

A total of 24 suspects were arrested in Alexandra on 21 February, for various crimes while five more suspects were arrested in Kempton Park for bank following incidents. One firearm and a hijacked vehicle was recovered.

Operation “O Kae Molao” that was conducted by a team of detectives, Premier David Makhura and Nkosi-Malobane in Kathorus, Ekurhuleni on 22 February saw a number of 27 wanted suspects arrested. Police also busted a syndicate at a house in Leondale which was linked to a number of robberies committed over the past few months. The suspects allegedly were impersonating as police officers during the crimes. They were found in possession of a blue light vehicle, reflector vests, clean docket covers and tyres. Other suspects were arrested in possession of drugs.

About seven suspects were arrested for illegal liquor dealing. Five scrapyards were closed due to non-compliance. More other suspects were arrested for being in possession of stolen property and house breaking tools.

“The safety and security of Gauteng citizens continues to be a matter of priority to the provincial government. I am encouraged by the number of arrests made by our law enforcement agencies in recent times. This bears testimony to the fact that our timeous response to criminal activities have improved drastically,” said Nkosi-Malobane.

Nkosi-Malobane said she has instructed the provincial police management led by Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, to continue with the swift arrest of all perpetrators linked to various criminal elements within the province. “It is very important that these criminals be brought to the book swiftly to face the full might of law. We cannot fold our arms and allow criminals to instill fear in our communities. The rule of law and order is not negotiable,” she added.
