Crime victim helps police make arrest

ALEXANDRA – A thief's plan backfired when his stolen goods were almost sold to the victim he stole it from.

A crime victim helped the police make the easiest of arrests when someone attempted to have her buy her own stolen items.

The victim, a hair salon owner, was approached by a man selling towels which were stolen in a break-in at the victim’s 1st Avenue business at night on 23 August, last year. A man approached her with the towels a day after the incident. After recognising them, she told him about the break-in and theft of the towels, a generator and other items.

She called the police and the man revealed that he was asked by Thabani Ntuli (32) to sell the towels. Ntuli was traced and admitted to the offence and he was arrested and the towels were recovered.

The generator was recovered from an old female street trader next to the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court who confirmed buying it from Ntuli. Ntuli was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
