Truth, lightens councillor’s work

ALEXANDRA – Councillor Mavhona details successes and challenges including residents' involvement.

Councillor Sannie Mavhona expressed cautious satisfaction with the level of service delivery in her ward saying departments have started listening and responding positively.

Mavhona of Ward 75 said, “With more still to be done, Joburg Roads Agency has fixed long-unmaintained potholed sections of 12th and Rooth avenues, and created essential stormwater drains. Housing has repaired several staircases in flats and converted shower rooms, which some residents used as personal storerooms, into toilets on 3rd and 4th avenues.”

She added that an allocation of R20 million which was reported in Alex News to be only for Madala Hostel included work at Helen Joseph Women’s Hostel and another one in Soweto.

She urged residents to play their part in maintaining the repaired infrastructure and to report vandalism. She requested that the city council complete all planned maintenance work and finish an abandoned housing complex on 3rd Avenue which had been taken over by criminal elements.

Mavhona also urged the City to consider her application for the Rea Vaya BRT station on Vincent Tshabalala Road to be located at the intersection of 6th Avenue where it will be closer for the majority of residents.

She implored residents to apply to City Power for electricity connections if permissible, particularly in backyard dwellings to avoid danger to themselves and their children.
