Highlands Park’s razor-sharp striker to score the crucial goals

JOBURG -– The Lions of the North, as Highlands Park is better known to faithful supporters, will welcome a new striker to their team.

Highlands Park can look forward to the arrival of a razor-sharp striker who will slice through the toughest of defenders to score those much-needed goals.

Asivile Tom, a product of the Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search for 2018 who goes by the nickname of ‘Razor’, was paired with the ‘Lions of the North’ for a month through a vote by football fans to see whether he can impress the outfit and ultimately clinch a contract.

He was part of the Ke Yona team that gave reigning champions of the Nedbank Cup 2018, Free State Stars a tough time but Ke Yona succumbed to a late strike that saw them beaten 2–1.

Tom, who hails from Mdantsane in East London in the Eastern Cape, is confident he will make the grade at Highlands to ultimately clinch a contract with the Balfour Park-based outfit that uses Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa as its home ground.

“I have no doubt in my mind that come the end of my month-long stay as a trialist with the club, I will be handed a pen and contract to seal the deal and pave the way for my permanent stay with my new found teammates,” said the 23-year-old who had a stint with Chippa United, playing for its MultiChoice Diski Challenge side last year.

“I am grateful for the opportunity and I will do all I can to add value to the team while at the same time learning from experienced peers. I will show the coach what I am made of,” added the player who is a qualified carpenter.

Tom comes from a family of sports people that have either played or are involved in some form of a sport such as boxing, marathon running, cricket, cricket and rugby. He started playing soccer in primary school and later joined a local team in Mdantsane, Islands FC before moving to a SAB League outfit, Zebras United, and ultimately Chippa United.

“I will give them goals. I will slice in-between defenders and cut through them just like my nickname to bang in those crucial goals,” said Tom, who credits sport and in particular football which took ‘me away from the pitfalls of crime, drugs and gangsterism’.
