Alex’s Bluebirds Ladies not safe yet from the drop zone of the Sasol Women’s League

ALEXANDRA -– Two wins move Bluebirds Ladies to a safer zone though they are not out of the woods as yet from the drop zone of the Sasol Women's League.

An out of this world triumph against multiple championship winners Palace Super Falcons may have propelled Bluebirds Ladies four places away from the relegation zone, but the Alex outfit is still not 100 per cent safe yet.

The Beautiful Birds outplayed the feared Thembisa side to record a 3–1 home win.

A goal from Yengiwe Selepe and a brace from diminutive right winger Tshwarelo ‘Golden Girl’ Digaota enabled the Birds to record one of the major upsets of the season following a miserable start to the 2018 Sasol Women’s League.

Before this remarkable win, the Birds of a feather had flocked together to dispose of struggling Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sports School 2–1, with former captain Nyatama Mnguni scoring the brace.

“The team has moved away from the relegation zone though the momentum still needs to be maintained in the next games to ensure total safety from the drop zone,” said Birds coach Malvin Khumalo in an interview with Alex News.

Khumalo predicted that his girls, Banyana baMalvin, as the team is better known in the township), will still be playing in the provincial league next season but they needed to push hard next season to stand a chance of winning the league and moving up to the national one. The South African Football Association has indicated it would start a national Sasol Women’s League in which winners of the various provincial leagues would then automatically qualify for the national league.

“We seriously need a sponsor to back us up if we’re to achieve our dream. The players have done well enough to save the team [from relegation] this season. They have shown grit and an unprecedented fighting spirit.

“All the credit must go to the players and their coaching staff and efforts from people such as Bulelani Maphanjwa and Emmanuel Malaka who have been with us season in and season out springing some of these amazing performances,” Khumalo said.

The Birds currently lie in 13th position on the 16-team log with 17 points from 23 games, with seven games to go. Birds’ neighbours, Croesus Ladies is chasing the championship with 52 points from 20 games.

Log leaders Tshwane University of Technology Ladies is sitting pretty on the summit with 61 points from 22 games while the Bedfordview side of Banyana Banyana skipper Janine van Wyk, JVW Ladies, lies second on 55 points from 21 games.
