LaLiga explores ways to help take women’s football to another level
JOBURG -– LaLiga looks forward to assisting Safa to develop women's football in the country.
Women’s football could be in for exciting times after LaLiga Africa director Antonio Barradas said his organisation was exploring ways of assisting the South African Football Association (Safa) take the sport to another level.
This announcement comes while Safa debates the introduction of a professional women’s league in 2019, along the lines of the Premier Soccer League’s Absa Premiership.
“We are currently in conversations with Safa in order to explore options for assisting them on the topic of women’s football development,” said Barradas at a media briefing at The Protea Hotel Fire and Ice in Melrose Arch.
“For us, it is very important that women have the platform to be able to compete and enjoy this beautiful sport.”
Barradas would not be drawn to disclose the nature of the negotiations with Safa. “Our partnership will have a special focus on the development of women’s football as we hope to share our knowledge and experience towards the strengthening of local football structures and thereby improve the present status of the sport.”
Barradas also outlined some exciting campaigns and new projects that LaLiga had in store for South African football lovers.
Included among the campaigns is the Future Players project which is part of the Gauteng Future Champions International project that has for the past three years awarded talented youth the opportunity to travel to Spain to further develop their football skills, courtesy of LaLiga.
The project comes alive again this month when the Gauteng Future Champions International is once again staged in the golden province to unearth some of the rough diamonds of football.
The selected grassroots players will train with LaLiga clubs and enjoy Spanish cultural experiences.
