National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete said something has seriously gone wrong in society and the country needs to go down to its knees and pray to God.
Mbete was speaking at the National Healing Prayer session against the killing of children and women that was organised by Alexandra Peace-Builders and the Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) held at Sankopano Centre.

“We cannot walk such a long way fighting for our freedom just to kill each other. There is something wrong with these killings that we see here in Alexandra and all over the country,” Mbete said.
“We [parliamentarians] and the police cannot stop this, we need the country to go down to its knees and pray to God.
“Our community needs to bring back the lost spirit of uBuntu. We can’t have men killing women and children hiding [behind] the name of love. Communities must rise up against these criminal acts and say enough is enough.” she added

ATA chairperson Vusi Mayaba commended Mbete who honoured their invite to their prayer session and asked the community to also pray for the taxi industry. “One must thank Mbete for availing herself for this event, even although the country is not yet in the election campaign season. The community of Alexandra should always know that as ATA we are always open to working with them,” Mayaba said.
Chairperson of Alexandra Peace Builders, Lucia Poko, urged the community to work with them in fighting social ills like teenage pregnancy and substance abuse.
