On 22 March, Johannesburg experienced heavy rainfall rain and this will extend well into the late hours of today, 23 March.
In a statement, the City’s Disaster Management Centre issued a warning of prolonged rainfall during this period and this is expected to cause flooding of low-lying areas.
The Disaster Management Centre said flooding occurs when water overflows its normal channels such as streams and stormwater drains. It can also occur as a result of prolonged periods of rainfall, continued heavy falls, as well as flash floods.
Residents are advised to take the following precautions:
- Stay indoors and off the roads if possible
- Avoid standing under big trees
- Look out for signs of potential tree toppling
- If trapped in a flooded vehicle, abandon the vehicle and call for help
- Take note of and adhere to alerts given over media platforms.
You’re also advised to avoid the following flood-prone areas in Alexandra:
- Dip along London Road between 21st Avenue and Lenin Drive
- Areas along the Jukskei River
- 20th Avenue and Alfred Nzo (Roosevelt)
- South Africa Boulevard (outside Skeen Primary School)
- 16th Avenue and Alfred Nzo (Roosevelt) and Corner Mike Diradingwe and Alfred Nzo (Deep potholes).
