Bail denied to alleged hijacker

ALEXANDRA – Alex man in the dock for elderly woman's hijacking.

An Alex man who allegedly failed to account for a reported hijacked motor vehicle found in his possession will reappear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court 9 April to confirm his legal representation.

The suspect was denied bail and remanded in custody in connection with the hijacking of a R60 000-worth Toyota Corolla from its 63-year-old female owner at 5.30pm on 31 January.

After arriving home in Edenvale from work, the victim stopped the vehicle and got out to open the gate. After driving in, she went back to close the gate and was confronted by two suspects. One of them allegedly grabbed her while the other pointed a gun at her.

They demanded the vehicle’s keys and drove away in it with her handbag and a laptop inside. She immediately reported the incident to the police who sent out an alert. The vehicle was spotted at 9.40pm at the intersection of 19th and Rooth avenues with two suspects inside. When police drew close, the suspects tried to drive off but were blocked by the police vehicle. The suspect who was driving was apprehended while his accomplice ran away. When asked about the vehicle and accomplice, he failed to account for it and identified the accomplice as Dido.

He was found in possession of a memory stick. It wasn’t said if it belonged to the victim. None of the victim’s other items was recovered. The vehicle was taken to police pound.
