Suspect injured in shootout

ALEXANDRA – Suspect injured in a shootout with security guards, appears in court.

A suspect who was arrested for attempted murder and robbery at a Sandton home in November last year was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending his trial on 16 February.

The 34-year-old appeared in court nursing a gunshot wound after a shootout with security guards who responded to the incident.

The homeowner heard dogs barking, and when he checked, the suspect and an accomplice allegedly broke a door with a pickaxe and barged in. The victim pressed a panic button and was reportedly assaulted by the suspects as he called for help. He was forced to open a safe from which they took jewellery. One suspect bit the victim’s finger and forced him to hand over a ring. They then ordered him to lie face down on the floor in a bedroom as they ransacked the place.

Minutes later, the victim heard gunshots outside when the guards responded. While the suspect’s accomplices fled in a getaway vehicle, he was shot in the leg and arrested.

Bags containing stolen items including a laptop were recovered at the scene.
